Social Studies/Academic Literacy

Academic Literacy is literally all the other subjects that are taught. Literacy is involved in all of them.

I want you to take a look at this website and tell me where using at least one component of balanced literacy is completely undoable for you. I think you'll find it's easier than you think:

Since my "technical" job is ELA and SS curriculum coordinator, I'm going to focus on Social Studies here:

The obvious is the reading of Social Studies text. Think about it though. They don't just read it. What reading skills can you incorporate while reading and studying about history?

What we need to do is combine our content area standards along with the reading needs of our students to not only differentiate instruction, but to focus on the needs of our students and move them forward.

The other aspect of Social Studies that I absolutely LOVE is timelines. Timelines are a huge part of reading - they have to understand these and be able to use them! And, it's a wonderful visual to have up while teaching historical events!
This is the timeline I used in third grade:

Check out these resources from the State Department. They follow the ELA communication standards, but include ALL core subjects.

This page will contain ideas from teachers on ways we can incorporate academic literacy in all our content areas.
