TDQ

UPDATE 10/4/17:

After reading teacher surveys and having individual conferences at each school, we felt that initiating a mandatory book study campus-wide was something that would not achieve anything more than adding more stress to your already over-flowing work loads.

So, here's how we're going to do it:

Everyone will receive the book (pictured below). Some of the skills in the book will be brought up in your weekly PD meetings with your Instructional Coaches. Everyone is expected to use the book as a resource for lesson planning.

If you would like to take your learning a little deeper and earn recertification credits, you may fill out the survey below to sign up for our district book study led by Dr. Larsen:

Requirements to earn recertification credits:

  • Meet after school once per month (for no more than one hour) - meant to be a "book club" type atmosphere.
  • Complete the "assignment" once per month on google classroom. The word "assignment" for this means a survey or a quick response to use for discussions - NO projects, group assignments, papers, etc.

Click the survey to sign up if you are interested (Please answer by 10/13/17): https://goo.gl/forms/lBJoAHnMuePEPKAq1

Why Are We Completing This?
Because:

-Testing (grades 3 - EOCEP) is going to require Text-Dependent Analysis questions
-Reading is strengthened through writing
-Read to Succeed states the following:

"All grade levels must focus on helping students comprehend print and nonprint texts authentic to the content area. The Read to Succeed Program is intended to institutionalize in the public schools a comprehensive system to promote high achievement in the content areas described...through extensive reading and writing. Research-based practices must be employed to promote comprehension skills through, but not limited to:

1. vocabulary (why we have walls)
2. connotation of words
3. connotations of words in context with adjoining or prior text
4. concepts from prior text
5. personal background knowledge
6. ability to interpret meaning through sentence structure features
7. questioning
8. visualization
9. discussion of text with peers

...these practices must be mastered by teachers through high quality training and addressed through well-designed and effectively executed assessment and instruction implemented with fidelity to research -based instructional practices presented in the state, district, and school reading plans"
(Read to Succeed, p.15-16)

Whew!

Or, it's because it's what's best for kids

However you want to look at it is fine. ;)
